Something Kerry Howley wrote on Reason’s Hit & Run got me thinking. Perhaps the nightmare seen in the Southern States of USA could serve as inspiration to many Swedish anti-sex prohibitionists. I quote:
Georgia’s Supreme Court recently upheld a 10-year sentence for Genarlow Wilson, who was prosecuted for having consensual oral sex with a 15-year-old girl. Wilson was just 17 at the time, and he’s already served almost two years. Glenn Reynolds, who thinks the punishment excessive, comments, “What’s more, were the genders reversed I doubt that it would even have been prosecuted.”
Possibly, but I think Reynolds is underestimating Georgia’s enthusiasm for turning every last man, woman, and child into a convicted sex offender. I’ve written before about the plight of Wendy Whitaker, who was tagged an offender for giving a boy a blow job as a tenth grader. She was 17; he was 15. She’s just one of thousands on the list who are there for consensual sex crimes, and she’s not the only woman.
While it sounds like the range of serious sex crimes may be narrowing (Wilson was punished under a dated law that deemed oral sex far more egregious a crime than genital sex), the range of restrictions on convicted sex offenders is expanding.
You see that! Swedish moralists, socialists, and nutjob feminists have much to learn from theoconservative Georgia. Why settle for a law against sex trade by consent when it’s possible to incriminate everybody seeking sex out of wedlock? I mean, knowing what the uptight rhetoric usually sounds like, I would imagine the debate to be something like this:
PC a-hole: Would you like your daughter to give boys blowjobs?
Sane person: No.
PC a-hole: Well then, why not criminalise blowjobs?
Sane person: Becuse I think people should have the right to choose.
PC a-hole: That’s nonsense. No women would want sex like that.
Sane person: Some women do.
PC a-hole: No, they are victims of a patriarchal society.
Sane person: Maybe they do anyway.
PC a-hole: Don’t you see it’s slavery you’re talking about.
Sane person: But…
PC a-hole: You wouldn’t want your daughter performing these sex acts, what makes you think anyone else would like to?
Sane person: It’s possible.
PC a-hole: Can’t you feel any sympathy for the women forced to give boys blowjobs?
The trick for every moralist is to make everyone believe that everybody else already hold a specific moral opinion. Few are those who manage to stand up for liberty when they feel isolated and fear being left in solitude. That’s how the prohibitionists win debates.
