This Blog Turns 20 Today

An image of my first diary entry.

Exactly twenty years ago, I began to keep this online diary, which I think is a better description than blog. Well, this is not really correct. I actually began blogging in April 2000, but a server crash erased everything, so I moved to a more secure host and set up a new website. On 23 August 2005, I posted my first entry here. This entry is number 13,900.

When I started, the blogosphere was the coolest thing. Everyone was a blogger. Not so any more. I’m not quite sure why, but I never really got tired of it, but my writing has developed over the years. In the beginning, much was about politics, often polemic and, to be fair, not always kind. Nowadays, I mostly post links to news articles, with occasional comment on daily life and the arts. I post links to stuff I find noteworthy. Blogging about it makes it stick in my brain, so when I need it, I find it here.

I don’t know when I’ll stop blogging. Maybe I wake up one day and feel it’s time to end it. Or, maybe, it dies with me one day.
