Palestine is the only “country” that was occupied before it is existed. Just saying. I’m so tired of people talking about occupation. Israel was there 3,500 years ago. Jews are the indigenous people. That doesn’t mean the Arabs have no legit claim to the land, it’s only means that the State of Palestine and its flag is a a twentieth-century invention. Before the current State of Israel, Palestine was rulered by the Turks and the British. So, please, stop posting British passport for Palestine and pretend it’s passports for an Arab state. John Spencer in Foreign Affairs:
It is now Israel’s responsibility to create the conditions that would allow new leadership in Gaza to survive. The first step is to reduce Hamas’s capabilities enough to let an external force enter Gaza and provide security in population centres. When a new body, such as the Palestinian Authority, takes over governance from Hamas, Israel will need to provide it security assistance, including with counter-terror operations. The role of Israeli forces should not amount to a constant presence in Gaza. As parts of the strip are stabilised, the new authority can lead the post-conflict work of deradicalisation, disarmament, demobilisation, and reconciliation. By supporting this new government in Gaza, facilitating the delivery of humanitarian aid, and making it possible to rebuild, Israel can show the Palestinian public it is committed to a better future without Hamas.

I rarely post anything in Swedish in this online diary, but today I replied to an article by Fredrik Segerfeldt in Dagens Arena, a Facebook comment I think holds some important aspects often ignored in Sweden’s debate on Israel.

Arwa Mahdawi has written a new article for the Guardian, in which she complains about people putting Israeli warfare into context. Only clear language is legit, and nothing should be added to the explain actions. However, in November 2023, a month after the worst program against Jews since the Holocaust, it was very important for Mahdawi so stress that Hamas’s terror attack “did not take place in a vacuum”. When it comes to anti-Semitic crimes, context seems very important for Mahdawi.

The declaration of a State of Palestine took place in Algiers in Algeria on 15 November 1988. Whenever pro-Palestinians say that Israel is only 76 years old, remind them of fact that “Palestine” is only 36 years old. It could have been of equal ages as the modern State of Israel had the Arabs accepted the Partition Plan of 1947 (see map).

Following the comment I made yesterday on Facebook about Israel’s right the land, some replies are more horrendous than others. Here’s woman who writes that Jews have themselves to blame for anti-Semitism and pogroms because we didn’t give up our identity and assimilate into oblivion. In fact, being Jewish in Europe is an insult to Europeans. So—to sum it up—Israel has no right to Israel, and Jews have no right to be in the diaspora, either.

Intersectionality also gives Israel-haters an aura of respectability when they proclaim the blood libel that the victims of Nazis have become Nazis. Or that people defending their country against a genocidal foe are themselves committing genocide. Or that an indigenous people, connected to the land for millennia, are actually colonists. Or that Jewish refugees from Eastern Europe and Mizrahim kicked out of Arab and Muslim countries are now imperialists. Or that a multi-ethnic country where people of colour make up at least half the Jewish population practices white supremacy. Or that a country of less than 10 million people and roughly the size of New Jersey has successfully conspired to dominate American politics.

Bertrand Benoit in the Wall Street Journal:
Björn Höcke, the firebrand head of the AfD [Alternative für Deutschland] party in the eastern German state of Thuringia, is leading ahead of a Sept. 1 regional ballot, according to an Aug. 13 survey by the INSA polling group. This puts a man who once said it was problematic to represent Hitler as “absolutely evil” in pole position to be the first postwar far-right politician to win a German state election.
Even if he doesn’t end up governing, a ballot win would make history in Germany. Crowning one of Europe’s most hard-line far-right groups would also mark an inflection point for a region where right-wing parties have found success by sanding down their ideological edges.
“It would be a turning point for sure, an earthquake,” said Axel Salheiser, scientific director of the Institute for Democracy and Civil Society in Jena, Thuringia’s second-largest city. “It would be highly symbolic for a far-right party to win, here of all places, in former East Germany, where the experience of dictatorship stretches across the 20th century.”
