France Considers Opening Shooting Galleries for Drug Addicts
France has long been one of the most illiberal countries in terms of drug policy. Along with Sweden, it has sought to block every attempt to have harm reduction replace criminalisation is the main strategy against problems associated with illegal drugs. It is therefore something of surprise to learn that France is considering opening “shooting galleries” for people addicted to drugs. I welcome this development and hope it will spread to Sweden and others countries where drug addiction is still seen as a crime best dealt with by policing and imprisonment.
I predict that France will follow Germany and shift its approach to drug taking. Forty years of zero-tolerance and criminalisation has only made matters worse for both individuals and society.
